Ratko Mladic's Funeral Sparks Controversy, Rekindles Bosnian War Wounds

Belgrade. Although the funeral of former Bosnian Army Commander Ratko Mladic, convicted of war crimes in the Bosnian War, was held with military honors in Serbia's capital Belgrade, the wounds of the Bosnian War from three decades ago have resurfaced.

Mladic, who died on August 27 in The Hague at the age of 84 while serving a life sentence, was buried on September 7 at the Topcider cemetery in Belgrade. Thousands of people attended his funeral. Some Serbian government officials and leaders of the Republika Srpska, the Serb-majority unit of Bosnia, also attended. The funeral, with military honors and nationalist slogans, drew international criticism.
