Mukta Kamaiya Families Find Livelihood Through Riverbank Farming

Kanchanpur. Vehicles plying on the East-West Mahendra Highway stop for a while in the Vanara area of Krishnapur Municipality. There are small huts made of thatch on the side of the road. Green cucumbers, watermelons, muskmelons, and gourds are displayed inside those huts. Travelers seeking coolness in the scorching heat stop there. They buy fruits and continue their journey.

But this small business on the roadside is not just a means to quench the thirst of travelers, it is connected to the livelihood, struggle, and self-reliance of the Mukta Kamaiya families. Neeraj Rana of Krishnapur Municipality-2 has been supporting his family by selling fruits and vegetables grown on the sandbanks of the Vanara river for the past four years.
