MP Sunil Bahadur Thapa Calls for Enhanced Disaster Early Warning System

Kathmandu. Nepali Congress MP Sunil Bahadur Thapa has stated that it is necessary to develop an effective disaster early warning system by connecting it with mountains and glaciers along with the monsoon. Speaking at the National Assembly meeting on Thursday, he pointed out that the damage caused by the flood in Bhote Koshi, Rasuwa, has raised questions about Nepal's early warning system, rescue capacity, and infrastructure development model. He emphasized that the government must be serious about addressing the basic needs of citizens who have lost family members, gone missing, and are forced to live in difficult conditions due to disasters. He urged for an appeal for international assistance as the flood in Rasuwa has also seriously affected the country's economy. He stated that the state must immediately and firmly stand by the citizens and families displaced by the disaster. Speaking in parliament, MP Thapa said, 'Today, a big question has arisen regarding Nepal's disaster infrastructure, early warning, rescue capacity, and reconstruction system. Now we need to develop an early warning system by connecting not only the monsoon but also mountains and glaciers.' Expressing concern about the human and physical damage, he added, 'Families have lost their members, thousands are missing. The damage to houses, roads, bridges, schools, health institutions, and drinking water has greatly affected the country's economy.' Reminding the responsibility of the parliament and the government, he said, 'This house must first firmly stand by the citizens and families displaced by the disaster. In the immediate priority, relief, rescue, safe housing, food, drinking water, and health services must be arranged.' He stated that the government's attention should be drawn towards arranging immediate relief and rescue for the flood-affected citizens, as well as safe housing, food, drinking water, and health services.
