Mingma Gyalje Sherpa Recounts Harrowing Rescue of Friends Lost in Broad Peak Avalanche

Mingma Gyalje Sherpa knew his friends were no longer in the world as he made his way towards the two bodies buried by an avalanche on the steep slope. All three had climbed the world's tallest mountains. They had journeyed through mountains, sometimes under clear skies, sometimes amidst dangerous blizzards. Mingma considered Nirmal Purja and Kili Pemba Sherpa among the strongest climbers he had ever known.

But as they were ascending Broad Peak in Pakistan this July, an avalanche swept away everything in its path.
