Human-Elephant Tussle

The ongoing human-wildlife conflict is spiking at an alarming rate in the eastern part of Nepal. The conflict is posing a threat to both humans and wildlife species; it is a serious problem that the authorities and conservationists have been facing owing to the economic damage caused to the people residing in the immediate vicinity of the park. It is also an environmental problem for humans. With 97 human deaths and 45 elephants in Koshi Province in the past two decades, it is evident that there has been mismanagement of space between humans and wildlife. Jhapa district has suffered from the impacts of human-wildlife conflict. In this district, 25 elephants have been killed, and 72 humans have lost their lives during this time span. The situation is worrying, as it shows how entrenched this problem has become because of the way people live and cultivate their land.
