Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has proposed the formation of a 'new alliance' with the European Union (EU) in the face of external pressure. Addressing the European Parliament on Thursday, he said that Canada and Europe should expand cooperation in various fields including defense, energy, and technology.

Carney's address came after EU chief Ursula von der Leyen proposed on Wednesday in her annual 'State of the European Union' address that Canada could become the first 'associate member' of the 27-member EU.
