Maternity Leave Counts

Birth rates have been falling globally. In some countries, such as China, South Korea, Japan, and some in Europe, fertility rates have plunged so low that they have alarmed governments into taking drastic measures to reverse the trend. The unforgiving demands of modern urbanised life have taken a heavy toll on family life, requiring long hours of work just to provide for the family. An added family member only adds to the pressure. This mounting pressure is often cited as a prime reason by many couples for postponing giving birth or even staying childless, despite wanting to have babies. Many wealthy countries have sprung into action to dole out generous handouts for new mothers and newborns to support them financially, as well as months-long maternity leave. Some have gone so far as to cover the entire education and health costs of the children until they reach adulthood.
