Former President Bhandari Highlights Nepal's Geopolitical Sensitivity and Economic Challenges

Kathmandu. Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has stated that Nepal is in an extremely sensitive region both geographically and politically. Speaking at the 'Himal, Climate and Disaster Dialogue' organized in Kathmandu on Saturday, she emphasized the need to build a self-reliant economy to reduce the growing trade deficit.

Mentioning that Nepal is situated between two large neighboring countries with huge populations to the north and south, Bhandari said that one must be sensitive to the country's problems and needs. She stated that Nepal's population is very small compared to the population of its neighbors. She pointed out that many of Nepal's problems could be solved if both neighbors showed a little cooperation and goodwill. Bhandari said that although Nepal is rich in natural beauty and importance, it has repeatedly faced hardships due to not seeking long-term solutions to problems including disasters. 'We are in a sensitive region not only geographically but also politically,' she said, 'We are located between countries with huge populations and significant development.' She stated that the state's attention should be focused on long-term policies and solutions, ending the situation of only dealing with immediate problems and disasters.
