United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has emphasized the need for emission cuts to curb temperature rise, along with climate justice and adequate financial assistance for developing countries in his final climate summit of his tenure. He accused the fossil fuel industry of treating the environment like an 'open sewer' and called for immediate effective action to address the climate crisis.

UN Secretary-General Guterres, along with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, is scheduled to address a high-level event at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Wednesday. Turkey and Australia are co-hosting the COP-31 climate summit in November.
