Two months after Ganesh Nepali, a rider, immolated himself at Tripureshwar in Kathmandu, a similar incident happened at the same place on Monday. Arjun Dong of Makwanpur set himself on fire inside a bus. Both succumbed to burn injuries. In both cases, the self-immolators had arguments with traffic and security police. These horrifying incidents point to serious flaws in our traffic governance and social behaviour. When an individual quickly decides to kill themselves out of impulse, this indicates a psychological problem that torments the person from inside. Patience, tolerance and poise are very important in preventing suicidal acts. When such incidents occur, people also become polarised, complicating efforts to find the truth and punish the guilty.
