Indra Jatra Festival Celebrated with Traditional Rituals

Kathmandu. Kumari Indra Jatra, known as a unique, religious, and cultural festival of the Kathmandu Valley, is being celebrated today with various rituals according to traditional methods. The main characteristics of this festival are the deep coordination of Hindu and Buddhist traditions, worship of the living goddess Kumari, installation of the Indradhwaj, chariot procession, traditional dances of various deities, and local Newari culture.

This festival, primarily associated with rain, prosperity, and abundance, has the living goddess Kumari's chariot procession as its most attractive aspect. The chariot of the living goddess Kumari, considered a representative of Goddess Taleju, is taken on a procession around the city through the old settlements of Kathmandu during Indra Jatra. This chariot procession is considered an opportunity for the goddess's city procession and for the general devotees to have direct darshan and perform puja. It has served to bind the religious life of Kathmandu, goddess worship, power worship, and community participation into a single thread.
