Koshi Province Faces High Risk of Glacial Lake Outbursts, Experts Warn

Biratnagar. The sudden flood that occurred on the morning of Bhadra 10 in the Bhote Koshi, flowing through Sindhupalchok and Rasuwa, has caused unimaginable damage, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of people, displacement of thousands, and destruction of infrastructure worth billions of rupees. The exact details of the damage are yet to be ascertained. Experts say the flood in Bhote Koshi was caused by a glacial lake outburst.

Government data indicates that about 42 glacial lakes of a similar nature in Koshi Province are at high risk of bursting.
