Government to Fill National Assembly Vacancies Promptly

Kathmandu. The government is to expedite the necessary process to fill the two vacant seats in the National Assembly as soon as possible. Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sobita Gautam, on behalf of Prime Minister Balen Shah, informed in today's National Assembly meeting that the Election Commission is proceeding with the by-election process for the vacant seat on the elected member side in accordance with the prevailing law. She stated that the process of recommending a suitable person for the post of member to be nominated by the President on the recommendation of the government, keeping in mind inclusivity, qualification, contribution to national life, and the dignity and role of the National Assembly as envisioned by the constitution, will be concluded as soon as possible. Minister Gautam mentioned that the issue of nominated members could not be concluded on time due to the transitional state of political and government changes, and that the government is aware that it is not appropriate to keep the seats of members of parliament vacant. According to her, in the coming days, effective coordination will be established between the Federal Parliament, the Election Commission, and the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers to initiate the recommendation or election process for filling vacancies in the National Assembly in a timely manner after a vacancy arises.
