Where have all the fireflies gone?

There was something magical about a power cut during the monsoon when I was growing up.

Once the lights inside the house went out, we would often wander outside. The darkness did not feel empty. Fireflies flickered among the bushes, along streams and over the edges of rice fields. Sometimes there seemed to be hundreds of them, blinking on and off without any obvious rhythm.
