Jute Imports Surge as Domestic Production Declines

Jhapa. At one time, jute produced in Jhapa, Morang, and Sunsari used to be exported to India and Bangladesh. But now the situation is exactly the opposite. As domestic jute production continues to decline, the graph of raw jute imports from India and Bangladesh for operating jute industries is increasing significantly every year.

In the fiscal year 2082/83 alone, raw jute worth Rs 4.91 billion 66 million 62 thousand was imported through the eastern border of Kakarbhitta. In the previous fiscal year 2081-82, jute worth Rs 4.34 billion 12 million 61 thousand was imported. In just one year, the import of raw jute has increased by approximately Rs 575.4 million, or 13.25 percent.
