AI Cameras Enhance Wildfire Detection in Europe Amidst Growing Concerns

Wildfires spreading through forests and rural areas in France, Spain, and Portugal this summer have forced millions to leave their homes for safer places. Terrifying scenes of firefighters and water-dropping planes battling wildfires have become familiar. In France alone, four people have lost their lives and 150 more have been injured while controlling wildfires this summer. The question arises: why are humans and 30-year-old planes still being used to control wildfires? If drones can perform some tasks for soldiers in Ukraine, why can't drones be used for the work of firefighters? Sergeant Guillaume Mille, a firefighter for 24 years in the Gironde region, leads the fire and rescue service branch of the 'CFDT' union in the most fire-affected area in France this summer. According to him, not much has changed in fire control technology, but there has been a big change in the technology for detecting fires in forests. 'The big change, especially in my area, is that we now have AI-powered cameras that monitor the forest and detect where the fire is starting,' Mille said. According to him, in Gironde, cameras have replaced the people who used to watch the forest from the surveillance towers of every city throughout the summer. Many of those observers were students. He says this change has reduced the occurrence of 'false alarms,' i.e., false fire notifications. 'AI-powered cameras can distinguish between dust and smoke kicked up by tractors in the field with almost complete certainty,' he said.
These cameras also have impressive reach. They can detect fires up to 20 kilometers away.
