Padma Devkota’s translation of Muna-Madan brings out a new reading of the celebrated poem in the English language, and it does so with a rare creative acuity.
The lack of translation of Nepali literary works into English (or any other language) has been a constant in the discussion of Nepali literature for a long time. Oftentimes, the conversation is prompted by authors’ humble desire to get translated into international languages and be read by a bigger audience. Sometimes it arises from a broader sense of cultural responsibility and a commitment toward Nepali literature, with the belief that we have produced works that deserve to be read and recognised internationally. Despite the ever-growing concern, however, the scene has hardly changed over the years.
