Women’s portrayal in Nepali cinema

The gap between women’s true selves and their image in most films is becoming harder to justify.

In commercial Nepali cinema, there are three typical female characters: the saintly mother in a worn cotton sari, the obedient girl next door in a kurta and the mouthy “modern” woman in a leather jacket. They all have tear-streaked cheeks at many, or at least one point in the film.
