Kathmandu: An exhibition of 19th-century European art has begun today at the Arupan Art Gallery in Lajimpat, Kathmandu.
Inaugurating the week-long exhibition, Kiran Manandhar, founding vice-chancellor of the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts, said that it is an important opportunity for Nepalis to see art here for free, which they would have to pay millions of rupees to see in foreign museums.
Recalling the great importance of art and artists in the world, artist Manandhar said that such importance has not yet been understood in Nepal.
He recalled that he had gone to Banaras after cheating his father of Rs 7,000 to learn art, but said that his attitude towards art has improved somewhat now. He said that during his time, his family would not even allow him to paint.
Another senior artist, Radheshyam Mulmi, said that art is highly respected in the world and is also gaining respect in Nepal, and shared his experience that the value of painting never decreases. He also suggested that children who have come to learn art should engage in artistic pursuits.
Ramesh Nath Khanal, the head of Arupan Art Gallery, said that the 30 works of accomplished artists presented here have a different theme and campaign, and that it is a great thing to see these paintings in Nepal. He informed that the art that his family brought from America when they visited there was exhibited in Nepal.
The gallery houses paintings by artists from Europe, including France, Germany, Belgium, Britain, Spain, the Netherlands, Norway, and others, including Millet, Paul, Louis Dewitt, Goya, Turner, Vincent van Gogh, J. Willem Goddard, and Goya. The gallery has already exhibited paintings by Picasso and Fida Kahlo.
Highlighting the upcoming programs of the Arupan Art Gallery, the gallery's executive director, Rita Khanal, said that after visiting major art galleries in the US, UK, and Australia, she realized that there was still much to be done.
The exhibition features 30 paintings by 19 world-renowned artists. Artist Khanal has collected and exhibited works from the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
Executive Director Khanal said, "These paintings were made at different times and can be read individually. They are small, but important. Not everyone can see them in large galleries. Therefore, we have collected and brought the paintings from those galleries so that they can be viewed in one place. This will help us understand the art movements that took place in Europe in the 19th century."
The exhibition will run until June 16.
