Dr. Shekhar Koirala Emphasizes National Unity and Reconciliation Policy

Kathmandu. Nepali Congress leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has stated that it is necessary to embrace BP's policy of national reconciliation and unity to provide a way out for the country. Speaking at a program organized in Kathmandu on the occasion of the 44th death anniversary of BP, leader Dr. Koirala said that unity within the party first and then among other forces in the country is essential for national interest. "BP's policy of reconciliation is essential now. For that, unity is needed first within the party and then among other forces in the country," said Dr. Koirala. Dr. Koirala also recalled a poignant episode during BP Koirala's treatment in Delhi. He said that even when he learned he was suffering from the fourth stage of cancer, BP's reason for asking the doctor how long he would live was not personal gain but the feeling that "there is still some work left to do for the country." Koirala said that there is a need to do so even now. Leader Koirala discussed various aspects of BP Koirala's political biography, struggles, and dedication to the country. At the program, Dr. Koirala recalled the incident of Poush 1, 2017 BS, and discussed the wonderful patience BP Koirala possessed. He said that at that time, when he was admitted to Shanti Bhawan Hospital (now Patan Hospital), BP had come to the hospital and informed him that the king was about to arrest them. Recalling the history of leaders like BP Koirala, Ganesh Man Singh, and Krishna Prasad Bhattarai spending seven years in Sundarijal prison after their arrest, Dr. Koirala suggested that young people and students visit Sundarijal to understand history. "To understand BP and feel his struggle, our student brothers and sisters must visit Sundarijal once," said Koirala. Koirala also raised the context of BP Koirala returning to the country on Poush 16, 2033 BS to protect nationality, disregarding the serious cases filed against him. "Even though there were seven cases against him that could have led to his death sentence, BP returned to the country after realizing that the nationality was weakening," said Dr. Koirala, "He had a strong belief that democracy and nationality must go hand in hand." Recalling BP's statement in court, as the party president, that he would take full responsibility for all political decisions and struggles made by the party, Dr. Koirala said that such courageous leadership is difficult to find in today's time.
