Kathmandu. A rare albino buffalo named 'Donald Trump', kept at the National Zoo of Bangladesh because of its resemblance to US President Donald Trump, has now become a major attraction across the country.
The buffalo, which has golden hair, yellow horns and weighs about 700 kilograms (1,500 pounds), has been attracting a steady stream of visitors from not only Dhaka but also from different parts of the country since it was moved to the zoo last week.
After its photos and videos went viral on social media, people are being drawn to zoos to see it in person.
This buffalo was originally intended to be used as a sacrifice for the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha.
But citing security reasons, the government ordered it to be transferred to the National Zoo in the capital, Dhaka, where it is now being viewed by large crowds despite the scorching heat.
The zoo was packed with visitors on Tuesday. People crowded around the buffalo enclosure, taking photos and videos with their mobile phones. Some parents were seen lifting their children onto their shoulders for a better view.
Zoo staff are taking care of the animals, trimming their hair, keeping them cool with water, and trying to protect them from the heat. According to visitors, this has made the buffalo feel more special.
Dhaka student Mohammad Nasim commented that the buffalo's appearance and behavior resembled US President Donald Trump. He said it received special attention and treatment after it went viral on social media.
But not everyone has the same reaction to the naming. Some visitors have commented that it is inappropriate to name an animal after a world leader. Dhaka resident Mohammad Joynal Adedin said that the decision seemed disrespectful and believed that the farmer had made the wrong decision.
According to local media, the zoo initially had a notice board reading "Donald Trump," which has since been removed. The zoo's curator was fired on Saturday in connection with the incident, but the official reason for this has not been made public.
The fate of the buffalo also seems to have changed in the context of Eid al-Adha. Initially sold for sacrifice, the buffalo was later returned after government intervention. The police reportedly intervened on the instructions of Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed.
The issue has been widely discussed on social media and on the streets. Mohammad Habibur Rahman, a visitor to the southwestern city of Jasore, said he first came to see the buffalo named 'Donald Trump' after hearing about it being sacrificed and then after hearing about it being kept in a zoo.
This buffalo, now a rare animal in the zoo, has become the focus of social media and public discussion, establishing itself as a special attraction throughout Bangladesh.
