China Medical University Investigates Gene-Editing Trial Death

Beijing. A top Chinese medical university is investigating the death of a young woman in an experimental gene-editing trial conducted by a leading expert at its affiliated hospital, raising serious concerns about ethics in China's burgeoning biomedical industry.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine has stated that it has established a task force to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the clinical trial conducted at Xinhua Hospital last year and the related scientific paper. An investigation has been initiated into the death of a 6-year-old girl named Mei following an experimental gene-editing treatment by neuroscientist Qiu Zilong.
