AI-Generated Image Falsely Shared as Photo of Nirmal Purja After Broad Peak Avalanche

Kathmandu. Following reports of the death of renowned mountaineer, entrepreneur and social worker Nirmal Purja (Nims Dai) in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan, an AI-generated image falsely claiming to show his body has gone viral on social media.

Purja, 43, was among a group of climbers reported missing after the avalanche last Thursday. The deaths of 10 members of the expedition were confirmed on Saturday. His climbing company, Elite Exped, later confirmed the news through social media.
