Nepal Floods Cause Catastrophic Damage, Displace Thousands

Kathmandu. A devastating and sudden flood in the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers on August 26 caused unimaginable loss of life and property in Nepal. The powerful flood, carrying water, debris, and large stones through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems, caused extensive damage to downstream areas.

Scientists from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and partner institutions in Nepal and China initially reported that the flood was caused by an ice-rock avalanche in the high Himalayas. Further research is ongoing.
