Kathmandu. Chinese auto manufacturer Chery's purchase of Nissan's former factory in South Africa has shown an increased interest from Chinese companies towards electric vehicle (EV) production in Africa.
With sluggish domestic demand for vehicles in China and increasing trade barriers in Europe and North America, Chinese automakers are starting to view Africa as a new market. According to analysts, local production can contribute to job creation, supply chain development, and the expansion of electric vehicle usage. However, weak infrastructure and policy uncertainty remain major challenges.
