World Meteorological Day
Background
Highlighting the importance of clouds in weather changes, World Meteorological Day has been observed every year on March 23 since 1961. Without the data collected by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), it would be impossible to receive accurate daily weather forecasts. The WMO plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of people around the world. Through its data, the organization helps protect global communities. Its work is vital for food security, water resources, and transportation. Meteorological data helps us track weather-related damage, plan our daily activities, and provide warnings about natural disasters. Thanks to this data, we can predict major storms, allowing people to evacuate or prepare for severe weather conditions in advance.
World Meteorological Day was officially established on March 23, 1961, in commemoration of the founding of the World Meteorological Organization. The year 2025 marks the 75th edition of World Meteorological Day, as the first celebration took place in 1961.
Objective
World Meteorological Day is observed annually on March 23 to commemorate the founding of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1950. This day also highlights the contributions of meteorological and hydrological services to the safety and well-being of human society.
Theme of World Meteorological Day 2025
The theme for this year is “Closing the Early Warning Gap Together.” The global community has chosen this theme to acknowledge the impact of weather and climate on future generations. Inspired by the statement of WMO Secretary-General, Professor Celeste Saulo, for World Meteorological Day 2025, this year’s theme emphasizes the importance of early warning systems before disasters occur. Additionally, 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of World Meteorological Day.
Nepal and Its Significance
Nepal and its people must be particularly sensitive to this issue, as our country stands at the top of the world. Our land, adorned with Mount Everest, should forever remain a playground for these atmospheric wonders. May the blessings of the weather always be with us. May the veil of clouds embrace our city, and yours as well.
Glory to all!
